Santiago is referred to as Santiago de
Chile and is the capital city of Chile as well as its largest city. The city is also one of the Americas’ largest cities and serves as the center of the vast Santiago Metropolitan Region, the largest and most populated conurbation in Chile. Located in the central valley in Chile, Santiago has one of the world’s attractive cityscape and skyscape, complete with very scenic surroundings and outskirts.
The city of Santiago has numerous neoclassical architecture designs in its buildings and is crowned with beautiful art decorations of various ancient styles. Some of such features include the Plaza de Armas in the heart of the city, the iconic Palacio de la Real Audiencia of 1808, and the Metropolitan Cathedral that dates back into the 18th century.
The outskirts of Santiago are crowned with many mountains and hills, rivers, forests, and vineyards that contribute significantly to the beauty of the city. The famous San Cristobal Hill is home to the large Parque Metropolitano, hosting activities like swimming, hiking, picnics, and animal watching. Shopping malls across the posh areas of the city provide for all shopping needs, and hotels and high-end restaurants have ready local delicacies and international fusions and cuisines. Later, visitors like to try out the energetic nightlife across town while enjoying their favorite music and drinks.
The climate of Santiago is typical of the semi-arid climate of Köppen classification BSk, but some features of the Mediterranean climate of Köppen classification Csb are registered too. The weather is mainly characterized by warm, humid, and dry summers and cold, humid, and tolerable winters. Rainfall in Santiago is significantly influenced by El Nino Southern Oscillation cycles and is usually experienced in the colder months of the year.
The cold months begin in
May and end in
October. The low temperature ranges between 2.5°C (36.5°F) and 7.3°C (45.1°F), while the highest recordings in the season fall within the range of 14.8°C (58.6°F) and 22.6°C (72.7°F). This season t receives most of the rainfall.
June and
July remain the rainiest months of the year, with 68.7mm (2.7") and 62.5mm (2.5") of precipitation respectively and an average of seven rainfall days each month.
The season receives approximately five hours of sunshine per day but has the highest humidity of the year - approximately 84%.
The warmer months begin in
November and extend through
April. This period is moderately dry as
December,
January, and
February pass without any precipitation recorded. April is the month that receives moderately high rainfall in the season, albeit in minimal amounts measured at 12mm (0.5") in the rain gauge. This season experiences the least humidity of the year and receives up to eleven hours of sunshine per day and extended daylight hours of up to fourteen per day. The mercury remains in the highs of 25.6°C (78.1°F) to 30.3°C (86.5°F) and lows of 7.1°C (44.8°F) to 12.6°C (54.7°F).
Traveling to Santiago is at its peak between November and April, during the hot season. This period offers the best weather, including warm and pleasant days that are moderately dry, and numerous events and festivals to be attended.
Events include the Fiestas Patrias Festival in
September, the Fiesta del Vino in April, and the celebration of Chilean music in the Festival Nacional del Folklore usually held in January.
