Shenzhen is one of the major cities in the province of Guangdong. It is conveniently located on the Pearl River Delta with Hong Kong to the south, the Huizhou region to the northeast, and Dongguan to the northwest. Shenzhen forms the link between Hong Kong and mainland
China.
The city is famous for its numerous shopping destinations, ranging from custom-made tailor clothes to the faux designer outfits and bags, all under the roof of Luohu Commercial City. The cityscape features modern skyscrapers and other contemporary architectural designs. The Ping An International Finance Center is one such modern structure, standing six hundred meters tall. Several amusement parks are also featured within Luohu Commercial City.
In the Shenzhen Museum, there are displays of various artworks and artifacts that depict the cultural and ancient aspects of Shenzhen. The He Xiangning Museum also displays attractive art and craftwork by modern artists, both local and international. In the OCT-Loft within range, there are art galleries and trendy boutiques in the ex-factory buildings. More is available in the Dafen Painting Town, where modern artists produce beautiful picture paintings.
Famous beaches for relaxation, swimming, and other activities during warm days are located in the eastern part of the city in Dameisha Beach Park. The Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens have become home to more than seven thousand species of organic plants and deep forest, beautiful in equal measure.
Another scenic spot in Shenzhen is the Dapeng Fortress on the Dapeng Peninsula, featuring a fourteenth-century walled village.
Shenzhen can be visited anytime during the year, but the peak of the tourists' arrival is during summer, between
June and
August, when it is quite warm and humid. Between
October and
December, the weather becomes mild and tolerable and is also an excellent time to tour Shenzhen. Between
July and
September, typhoons are a common occurrence, and precaution is advised.
The Dragon Boat Races is a popular festival held in June featuring boat activities on the Pearl River waterfront of Shenzhen. Also, on varying dates in September and October, the Moon Festival is celebrated in all the color and pomp. Another festival not to be missed is the China Cup International Regatta held in October.
