Santorini is a beautiful island located in the southern region of the Aegean Sea in proximity to the southeastern part of the mainland of Greece. It is the largest of a small group of islands and forms the southernmost of the Cyclades group of islands. Its municipal region includes Therasia, Nea Kameni, Aspronisi, Palaia Kameni, Christiana, and Santorini islands.
Santorini is located on the spot where the largest volcanic eruption in history happened. Famously known as the Thera eruption or the Minoan eruption, the volcanic activity took place almost three thousand six hundred years ago, leaving behind a large caldera and vast ash deposits that are still evident on the collapsed caldera to date. The eruption is the main reason for the beautiful rugged landscape of the city. Today, Santorini remains the most active volcanic center in all of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc.
Santorini is composed of two main towns; Fira and Oia. Both of them are stunning sightseeing spots, overlooking the sea, with views of the vast beaches dotted with red, white, and black pebbles from the lava. Cliffs clinging to the sides of the caldera offer sweeping views of the underwater caldera area.
Fira is the heart of the commercial hub of the city and has more attractive spots for visitors. The Archaeological Museum of Thera has beautiful displays of the history of the city from the Minoan Era. It has a vibrant shopping section full of stalls and malls to that effect. Its food scene features an exquisite local setting as well as tasty seafood, including international cuisines and fusions. The active nightlife is easy to see, complete with numerous bars, clubs, and discos along the beautiful waterfront promenade.
Visitors throng to Oia to witness the beautiful sunsets and sunrises as well as the dramatic and scenic views over the city.

When to visit Santorini

The city of Santorini experiences a semi-arid climate, classified as Bsh under the Köppen climatic classification, with a slight bordering on a Mediterranean climate. The summers are warm and moderately dry, with most days going by with barely any raindrop. High humidity and ample sunshine is a common phenomenon. Winters are mildly cold and moderately wet. Extremely low temperatures are minimal, and most days make by with abundant sunshine. Spring and autumn are short but have mild and pleasant weather.
Summer extends from May through July, and the mercury stretches to highs of 30.2°C (86.4°F) and lows of 23.6°C (74.5°F). Extremely hot days are rare, making it an excellent time to be out touring the city.
Winter begins in December, running through February. The temperature averages highs of 15.5°C (59.9°F) and lows of 9.9°C (49.8°F) approximately. Much of the rainfall is received in December and January, albeit in minimal amounts, accumulating to a total of 146mm (5.7") of precipitation on average.
The peak travel season to Santorini is between May and September, during the peak of the dry and hot weather. The atmosphere transforms into a lively one, aided by the brightly colored buildings and landscape of the city. Apart from the lovely outdoors weather, the season also offers many events and festivals to enjoy.
The August Ifaisteia Festival is among the most attended events in the city. It is celebrated amid numerous cultural activities with a culmination of beautiful firework displays in the night sky. Then the International Music Festival of Santorini comes around in September, featuring amazing classical music concerts in select venues in downtown Santorini.
