Cusco is a beautiful, ancient city located in the southeastern region of Peru, a country in South America. Cusco serves as the capital city of the Cusco Region, as well as that of the Cusco Province. With a moderately high elevation of about eleven thousand two hundred feet, Cusco has a beautiful location near the ever-green and scenic Urubamba Valley in the area around Andes Mountain Ranges.
The city of Cusco, once the Inca Empire's capital city, has since been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it has become a significant destination for tourists, receiving close to two million visitors per year.
Throughout Cusco, magnificent Spanish colonial architecture is evident, even in the numerous archaeological ruins around the city. Top of the list is the vast Plaza de Armas, an ancient spot that features beautiful arcades with carved wood balconies and wall ruins that date back into the Incan Era. The Coricancha ancient temple, once the most significant temple during the Inca Empire period, stands upon a slight elevation and is still a vital spot in Cusco. Then there is the iconic Saksaq Waman citadel that is found to the northern part of the outskirts of Cusco that remains a crucial tourist attraction spot with its rich history.
Several spots throughout Cusco provide for high areas from where visitors get to enjoy the fantastic views of the city below, including the neat rows of the colonial houses in their red roof tiles.
The Cusco Museum is one of the many uniting factors in the city, bringing people together to learn a few things about the rich history and culture of Cusco.

When to visit Cusco

The city of Cusco enjoys a subtropical highland climate of Köppen classification Cwb. The weather is characteristic of four distinct seasons, divided majorly into two: a rainy season and a dry season. There is a minimal difference between the high-temperature ranges across the year, with an annual average of 19.8°C (67.6°F).
Between April and September, Cusco experiences winter, with mildly warm days and extremely cold nights with occasional night time freezing. Snowfall is rare, even if there is a periodic drop of the temperature below 0°C (32°F). This is the driest period of the year, too, with June as the driest month garnering a low 2.4mm (0.1") in precipitation.
Summer runs from October to march, and it is characterized by a slight rise in the daily highs and lows. Ample rainfall accumulating to 601mm (23.7") in the total average.
Cusco is a year-round travel destination, thanks to its stable weather throughout the year. The travel season, however, tends to peak between May and September, when most days are dry, and the humidity is at its lowest. However, this is the period that has the chilliest nights throughout the year. It does make a huge difference, though, since the night temperature ranges remain low across the year. The daytime temperature also remains mild, usually not exceeding 25°C (77°F), even in the warmest month.
The annual Cusco Carnival is held between February and March on select dates. It is famed for its numerous well-synchronized parades, many themed games, as well as endless feasting featuring renowned local and traditional dishes.
The annual traditional Inca ceremony is held in Saksayhuaman every year on the 24th of June during the Inti Raymi Festival, dubbed the Festival of the Sun.
