Sun Moon Lake has a humid subtropical highland type of climate (Köppen climate classification Cwb) with hot and humid summers and short and relatively dry winters. It lies in the hilly and landlocked Nantou County, in the rural Yuchi Township in central Taiwan. The monsoon primarily influences the climate of the lake as well as the entire county, while the numerous mountain peaks, many of which are at least 3000 meters high, also affect the climate.

Sun Moon Lake has a surface elevation of 748 meters above sea level and is 27 meters deep. The topography of the surrounding area consists of low-lying hills and mountains with many hiking trails. Sun Moon Lake derives its name from the geographical fact that its east side resembles a sun and west side resembles a moon. A tiny island lies at the center of the lake.

Summers usually last from April to October around Sun Moon Lake and are long, humid, and wet. The average high temperature is 27.8°C (82°F) at the peak of summer in July.
