The state capital is Montgomery and Alabama is bordered by Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi with the Gulf of Mexico to its southwest.

In 1861, Alabama seceded from the Union and became a part of the Confederacy. It was readmitted in 1868 and during Reconstruction, efforts to include African Americans in government failed. Segregationist policies remained in effect until the 1960s.
