Sofia is the capital city and the largest of the cities in Bulgaria. It is one of the oldest cities in the country, holding eras and eras of cultures and history, as far back as two thousand years and earlier. Some of the featured periods include the Greek, Soviet, Roman, and Ottoman as far back as 29BC.
Sofia is located at the base of the ever-glorious Vitosha Mountain to the western part of the country in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. Even better, Sofia has a convenient location between the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea and is in proximity to the Aegean Sea. The scenic natural outskirts have been on the frontline in attracting tourists to the city and its surrounding regions.
The architecture in the city features significantly on ancient designs, as noted in the Boyana Church from the thirteenth century, the famous St. George Rotunda Church from the fourth century, with decorations from as far back as the tenth century.
The history surrounding the Russian-Turkish War has been preserved away in the national Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its onion-shaped domes, in a bid to commemorate the Russian soldiers who died in the war. More are available in the National Archaeological Museum, where unique masterpieces and original artwork both from the past and present have been stored.
Outdoor activities include hiking and mountain biking up and down the trails on Mount Vitosha, which also provides for skiing and skating during winter. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking take place in the rivers around the city.

When to visit Sofia

The climate of Sofia is typical of the humid continental climate of Köppen classification Dfb. The weather is characterized by summers that are warm and pleasant, quite sunny, and moderately humid, and winters that are cold to chilly, snowy, and moderately dry. Spring and autumn are short and mild, and both exhibit highly varying and dynamic weather, mainly acting as transitional seasons.
Summers are warm with the mercury stretching to highs of 25.3°C (77.5°F) and lows of 13.3°C (55.9°F) on average. Scorching days are regular when the temperature can shoot as high as 35°C (95°F), bringing with it strong heat waves to which visitors are cautioned.
Winters are mainly cold, as the mercury stretches to highs of 4.1°C (39.4°F) and lows of -3.3°C (26.1°F) on average. The nights may feel a lot colder as the temperature drops further, but the days warm up with approximately two hours of sunshine per day.
Sofia is a year-round travel destination owing to its beautiful weather in all the seasons. Winter is fantastic for the cold lovers who take to skating and skiing on the Vitosha Mountain, and summer is great for the heat lovers as it allows for an excellent exploration of the city. The peak of the travel season falls in late spring through summer, between mid-March and July, and between December and mid-April, during the ski season.
Some of the popular events are like the Holy Ester week that takes place on varying dates between March and April amid feasts, religious processions, and beautiful decorations. Then there is the vibrant Sofia Music Week that occurs every year between May and June at the National Palace of Culture. Many music shows, classical shows, and other concerts are shown throughout the period.
