Sofia is the capital city and the largest of the cities in Bulgaria. It is one of the oldest cities in the country, holding eras and eras of cultures and history, as far back as two thousand years and earlier. Some of the featured periods include the Greek, Soviet, Roman, and Ottoman as far back as 29BC.
Sofia is located at the base of the ever-glorious Vitosha Mountain to the western part of the country in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. Even better, Sofia has a convenient location between the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea and is in proximity to the Aegean Sea. The scenic natural outskirts have been on the frontline in attracting tourists to the city and its surrounding regions.
The architecture in the city features significantly on ancient designs, as noted in the Boyana Church from the thirteenth century, the famous St. George Rotunda Church from the fourth century, with decorations from as far back as the tenth century.
The history surrounding the Russian-Turkish War has been preserved away in the national Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with its onion-shaped domes, in a bid to commemorate the Russian soldiers who died in the war. More are available in the National Archaeological Museum, where unique masterpieces and original artwork both from the past and present have been stored.
Outdoor activities include hiking and mountain biking up and down the trails on Mount Vitosha, which also provides for skiing and skating during winter. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking take place in the rivers around the city.
