Indian Wells has a hot desert type of climate (Köppen climate classification BWh) with hot and dry summers and warm and almost dry winters. Indian Wells lies in the arid Coachella Valley of Southern California with mountains to the western, eastern and northern sides. The influence of the high-pressure subtropical anticyclone system of the lower middle latitudes creates hot and arid conditions in Indian Wells.

Indian Wells lies at an altitude of 27 meters above sea level, in the rain shadow region of the mountains. The Palm Desert is nearby, which results in large swathes of arid land with numerous palm tree plantations dotting the dry landscape. The city hardly has 1.85% of the area under the water, as Indian Wells is one of the warmest places in the United States.
The surrounding hills offer many hiking trails, and the vegetation is typical of hot desert lands.

The summer season is long and scorching in Indian Wells with the peak temperatures at an average high of 108°F (42.2°C) in July. The sun is perennially at high angles to the land, and the high air pressure creates a dry atmosphere. Winter is mild with a negligible amount of precipitation in about ten wet days. The nights may occasionally drop below freezing in the cold season. Spring and fall are brief with the temperatures that are mostly on the warm side and almost absent rainfall.

Indian Wells is dry throughout the year, with around 3420 hours of abundant sunshine. The annual precipitation is a meager amount of only 5" (127mm), much of which occurs during the mild winter. The subtropical anticyclone prohibits rainfall in the region, as the skies remain mostly clear. The consistently high pressure creates hot and arid conditions with intense sunshine. The temperature varies widely between day and night and may even drop below freezing during winter nights.

The record high temperature for Indian Wells is 123°F (50.6°C), set in July 1905, while the lowest temperature on record is 19°F (-7.2°C), set in January 1937.

The best time to visit Indian Wells is from December to April that includes the winter and short spring. The winter season is mild with mostly warm days, but the nights can be cold and occasionally drop below freezing. A few days of rainfall brings a feeling of pleasantness in the atmosphere as the dust settles down. Early spring has comfortable days with mild to warm nights.

The worst time to visit Indian Wells is the hot summer from June to August when temperatures run amok, and highs of 120°F (48.9°C) are common. The scorching sun can be deadly in dry conditions, and it is prudent to avoid times when the sun is directly overhead. The vast difference in temperatures between day and night can be uncomfortable for many people.

Indian Wells is vulnerable to earthquakes as the San Andreas Fault runs through the Coachella Valley. The tremors are small and frequent, but the possibility of a magnitude 8 earthquake exists across several decades. Although heavy rainfall is rare, even moderate precipitation causes significant flooding as the desert soil is unable to hold water. Droughts and wildfires are common hazards in Indian Wells, particularly during the summer season. Dust devils can cause havoc with wind speeds of 40 to 60 miles per hour.
