is a country located in North America. It has an area of 3,855,103 square miles (9,984,670 sq km). According to estimates for 2023, the population of Canada stands at 37,808,000. The capital of Canada is Ottawa. Most of the population of Canada is descended from British and French immigrants, with significant minorities of Chinese, South Asian, German, Italian, American Indian, and Inuit (Eskimo) origin. English and French are both official languages of Canada. Christianity is the dominant religion, with most people belonging to the Roman Catholic denomination, however other Christian denominations, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism are all practised as well. The official currency of Canada is the Canadian dollar.
The geography of Canada can be divided into several physical regions. The largest of these is the interior basin, centred on Hudson Bay, that makes up nearly four-fifths of the country. This region includes the Canadian Shield, the interior plains, and the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence lowlands. Mountain ranges and highland regions, such as the Arctic Archipelago, rim this basin. Notable mountain ranges include the Rocky Mountains, Coast Range, and the Laurentian Mountains. The highest peak in Canada is Mount Logan, which reaches 19,551 feet (5,959 m). There are five major rivers in Canada, including the St. Lawrence, Mackenzie, Yukon, Fraser, and Nelson, all of which rank among the world's 40 longest. In addition, Canada contains two of the world's 11 largest lakes in area, Great Bear and Great Slave, as well as Lake Superior and Lake Huron, both of which are shared with the United States. The country also includes several large islands, such as Baffin, Ellesmere, Victoria, Newfoundland, and Melville, and many smaller ones. Its border with the United States extends 5,525 miles (8,890 km) and is the longest international border in the world without military patrols.
With an export-oriented market economy closely linked with that of the United States, Canada is one of the world's most prosperous countries. Governmental policy is based on a federal multiparty parliamentary system with two legislative houses, the Senate and the House of Commons. The head of state is the British monarch, whose representative is Canada's governor-general, while the prime minister serves as the head of government.
