Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are an external territory of Australia located in the eastern Indian Ocean. This Territory consists of two atolls and 27 coral islets covering an area of 5 square miles (14 square km). The population as of 2016 was 544.

The Cocos Islands were discovered in 1609 by William Keeling and first settled in 1826. In 1857 they were declared a British possession, though they fell under the government of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) at certain points in time. Finally, in 1955, the islands passed to Australia and in 1984 the residents voted to merge with Australia.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are situated around 580 miles (930 km) southwest of Java and provide a peaceful atmosphere for its inhabitants.
