Athens is known for its long, hot and dry summers and mild winters. It has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Koppen climate classification: Csa). With an average of 16.4" (416.6mm) of precipitation a year, the majority of which occurs in the winter months, between October and April. The rainfall during the summer months mostly occurs during the thunderstorms which take place once or twice a month.

July tends to be the hottest month, with the daily average high temperature of 93.9°F (34.4°C), though western areas of the city tend to see higher temperatures due to the industrialization of the area.

Athens holds the World Meteorological Organisation record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe, at a scorching 118.4°F (48°C).

The best time to visit Athens, Greece, is either in the spring or autumn months.
Although there is the occasional spot of rain, the average temperature in both May and October is a very pleasant 68°F (20°C) - the perfect temperature for exploring the city and surrounding area.

The worst time to visit the city is from late July to early September when the average temperature is 89.6°F (32°C), and depending on the part of the capital even more, with no clouds as a respite from the summer sun. The problem of traffic congestion in the city center mixed with this heat results in an unpleasant summer smog.
From mid-October, the weather is less uncomfortable as it is more cloudy and likely to rain than in summer, but when it does rain, sometimes it can be violent and concentrated.

Although Athens generally has less rainfall than northern Greece, thunderstorms are almost as frequent and often suffers from flooding, mainly due to human intervention. Athens can also go through some hot and dry periods, which sometimes lead to violent forest fires.
