Athens is known for its long, hot and dry summers and mild winters. It has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Koppen climate classification: Csa), with an average of 16.4" (416.6mm) of precipitation a year, the majority of which occurs in the winter months, between October and April. The rainfall during the summer months mostly occurs during the thunderstorms which take place once or twice a month.

July tends to be the hottest month, with daily average high temperature of 93.9°F (34.4°C), though western areas of the city tend to see higher temperatures due to the industrialization of the area.
Athens holds the World Meteorological Organisation record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe, at a scorching 118.4°F (48°C).

The best time to visit Athens, Greece, is either in the spring or autumn months. Although there is the occasional spot of rain, the average temperature in both May and October is a very pleasant 68°F (20°C) - the perfect temperature for exploring the city and surrounding area.

The worst time to visit the city is from late July to early September when the average temperature is 89.6°F (32°C), and depending on the part of the capital even more, with no clouds as a respite from the summer sun. The problem of traffic congestion in the city center mixed with this heat results in an unpleasant summer smog.
From mid-October, the weather is less uncomfortable as it is more cloudy and likely to rain than in summer, but when it does rain, sometimes it can be violent and concentrated.

Although Athens generally has less rainfall than northern Greece, thunderstorms are almost as frequent and often suffers from flooding, mainly due to human intervention. Athens can also go through some hot and dry periods, which sometimes lead to violent forest fires.

Along with being one of the coldest months of the year, with an average temperature of 50°F (10°C), January has very little sunshine and a fairly high chance of rain for Athens standards. Winter is truly at its peak in January, however, for those that live in the city life goes on as normal. The main difference is that some tourist attractions are closed, and there are generally fewer people hitting the streets.

February is one of the coldest months of the year, yet is still relatively mild for winter in Europe. Like January, the average temperature is 50°F (10°C), but it is one of the months where rain is most likely. Nevertheless, despite the relatively high chance of rain in Greek standards, there is also a good chance of some sunny days. Although the streets are not quite as crowded, the city is still quite alive during the winter, with pavement cafes, plenty of shopping and a popular nightlife scene.

The first signs of spring weather begin to appear. March is a great time to visit Athens before the temperatures begin to get too high. The average temperature is 53.6°F (12°C), so although a coat is likely to be needed, the winter chill starts to ease slightly.
There is generally a mix of cloudy and sunny days, and being the third rainiest month, a little rain from time to time is expected. Towards the middle of the month, the number of sunny days rises, making the days in Athens feel a bit warmer.

April brings warm, spring temperatures, with an average of 59°F (15°C). With mostly sunny days and very little chance of rain, April is when Athens start to see a slight increase in the number of visitors, as people are searching for warmer European temperatures.
The rising temperatures finally start to warm up the sea, although it still feels initially cold, and is often too cold to stay in for extended periods of time. June is when summer officially begins in Athens, with an average temperature of 75.2°F (24°C) and remaining pretty much the same throughout, with just a slight rise as the year goes on. June is a popular month for those visiting the city, as the warmer weather also means much sun and relatively little chance of rain.

The average day temperature ranges from 59°F (15°C) to 73.4°F (23°C), and the temperature decreases further still nearing the end of the month. For many, this weather is still considered pleasant, especially as the chance of rainfall is still considerably low.
