Haiti
Haiti is a small Caribbean nation located on the western portion of the island of Hispaniola. It is bordered to the east by the Dominican Republic, and its capital city is Port-au-Prince. Haiti covers an area of 10,450 square miles, with almost two-thirds of the land situated at elevations of 1,600 feet or higher. The climate is tropical and modified by the presence of mountains, but it is prone to periodic droughts and hurricanes.
The population of Haiti is estimated at 12 million in 2022, with almost the entire populace descended from African or African-European ancestry. Haitian Creole and French are the official languages, while Christianity (mainly Roman Catholic but also Protestant) and Vodou are the main religions. The monetary unit is the gourde.
Haiti has a developing market economy largely dependent on agriculture and light industries like coffee production. Its government is a multiparty republic with two legislative houses - the Senate and Chamber of Deputies. The president is the chief of state and the prime minister is the head of government.
Despite its economic progress, Haiti remains one of the poorest countries in the Americas. The Artibonite River is the longest river in the country. Other natural resources include gold, copper, silver and marble.
