Honduras is a country located in Central America. Covering an area of 43,433 square miles (112,492 sq km), it is the second largest nation in the region. As of 2022, the estimated population of Honduras is 9,596,000 people, most of whom are mestizos. The official language is Spanish and the predominant religion is Christianity, with Roman Catholicism being the main denomination.
Honduras has a long coastline on the Caribbean Sea to the north, as well as 45 miles of shoreline on the Pacific Ocean side of the isthmus. The terrain is mostly mountainous and wooded, with eastern lowlands that include part of the Mosquito Coast. The majority of the population lives in isolated communities in the interior, where the climate is hot and humid.
The economy of Honduras is mainly agricultural, with bananas, coffee, and sugar being the most important exports and corn being the primary staple for domestic consumption. The Honduran currency is the lempira.
The government of Honduras is a multiparty republic, with one legislative house known as the National Congress. The head of state and government is the president.
