Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China located on the country's southern coast, consisting of the island of Hong Kong, adjacent islets in the South China Sea, the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. The entire territory was returned to China in 1997.
The administrative centre of Victoria on Hong Kong island is also the centre of economic activities, making it one of the world’s major trade and financial centres. It has many educational institutions, including the University of Hong Kong (1911). The official languages are Chinese and English, although no official religion exists.
Covering an area of 1,114 square kilometres (430 sq mi), the estimated population of Hong Kong as of 2023 is 7,444,000 people. The life expectancy at birth is 82.2 years for males and 88.1 years for females. Literacy rate among those aged 15 and over is 96.9% for males and 89.6% for females.
Gross national income (GNI) for 2020 is 363,851 million US dollars, with a per capita GNI of 48,630 US dollars. Political status is that of a special administrative region of China, with one legislative house (Legislative Council[90'>) .
