Weather in June

June marks the official start of summer in Iceland. During this month, temperatures continue to rise, with averages ranging from 9°C (48.2°F) to 14°C (57.2°F). The coastal areas, including Reykjavik, are typically warmer due to the moderating influence of the North Atlantic Ocean. It is important to note, however, that while temperatures are milder, they do not reach the sweltering highs common in other parts of the world during summer.

Daylight reaches its peak in June due to the phenomenon known as the Midnight Sun, where the sun barely dips below the horizon. As a result, there are nearly 24 hours of visible light, making the days exceptionally long. The abundance of daylight allows for extended exploration and sightseeing opportunities and contributes to the lively atmosphere of the summer season.

June experiences very little snowfall, with only the highlands and the northernmost regions seeing any significant snow. Rainfall, however, is more common and averages between 40mm (1.57") to 50mm (1.97"), primarily in the southern and western coastal regions. These showers are usually brief, allowing for plenty of dry and sunny intervals throughout the day.

Wind speeds in June are slightly lower than in previous months but still average around 13km/h (8.1mph). The impact of the wind chill is not as strong due to the warmer temperatures, but it can still make conditions feel cooler, particularly during the rare overcast and rainy days.

June is an excellent time to visit Iceland, given the mild weather and extended daylight hours. The landscape is lush and vibrant, with wildflowers in bloom and bird colonies nesting, especially in areas like the Westfjords and the South Coast. Outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and wildlife watching are particularly enjoyable during this time. The Midnight Sun also provides a unique spectacle, particularly around the summer solstice. The chances of seeing the Northern Lights are almost nonexistent due to the prolonged daylight. Nonetheless, the appeal of the Icelandic summer, with its unique blend of mild weather and constant daylight, offers a unique experience not to be missed.
