Jersey
Jersey is an island located in the English Channel, to the south of England and to the northwest of France. It has a population of approximately 110,300 people as of 2022 and its capital is Saint Helier. Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and has a total area of 119 square kilometers, or 46 square miles.
The island has a rich history, having been separated from Normandy in 1204 but still retaining its unique Norman law and customs. Jersey was administered by the English King through a warden and gave rise to two iconic items: Jersey fabric and Jersey cattle.
Today, Jersey is classified as a British crown dependency, with the United Kingdom having ultimate responsibility for the island's defense and international relations. The official languages in Jersey are English and French, while the official religion is none. The currency used on the island is the Jersey pound (£J).
In terms of its demographics, around 30.9 percent of Jersey’s population lives in urban areas, while 69.1 percent lives in rural areas. Life expectancy at birth is estimated at 80.8 years for males and 84.6 years for females. The literacy rate is 100 percent for both sexes. The Gross National Income (GNI) per capita in 2009 was 62,474 US dollars. Jersey has one legislative house, known as the Assembly of the States of Jersey.
