Montenegro
Montenegro is an independent nation situated in the western-central Balkans. It is bordered by the Adriatic Sea and Croatia to the southwest, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east, and Albania to the southeast. The country's administrative capital is Podgorica, while its cultural centre is the historical city of Cetinje.
Montenegro was a part of Yugoslavia for much of the 20th century, and from 2003 to 2006 it was a component of the federated union of Serbia and Montenegro. As of 2022, Montenegro has an estimated population of 619,100 people. The official language is Montenegrin, but other languages such as Serbian, Bosnian, and Albanian are spoken in some regions. Montenegro has a multiparty republic with one legislative house, the Parliament (81). Though the official religion is none, many Montenegrins practice Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
The total area of Montenegro is 13,883 sq km, or 5,360 sq mi. The population density is 115.5 persons per sq mi and 44.6 persons per sq km. The urban population comprises 66.8%, while the rural population makes up 33.2%. The life expectancy at birth is 74 years for males and 79.5 years for females. The literacy rate is 99% for both males and females. Montenegro's Gross National Income (GNI) is 4,912 U.S. dollars (000,000), and the GNI per capita is 7,900 U.S. dollars.
