The climate of Paraguay

Paraguay, a landlocked country located in South America, is principally split into two topographical regions: the tropical Chaco region to the west and the subtropical Paranaense region to the east. The climate of Paraguay is characterized by warm to hot temperatures throughout the year, with marked variability in rainfall patterns, leading to distinct wet and dry seasons.

In the Paranaense region, temperatures are moderate with an average of 17.9°C (64.2°F) during winter (July) and 28°C (82.4°F) in summer (January). This region experiences considerable rainfall throughout the year, averaging 1,270mm (10.63") annually. The rainfall is fairly distributed throughout the year, with March through May and October through November being the wettest periods. This region also faces occasional frost threats in winter due to cold Antarctic air masses.

On the other hand, the Chaco region has a more tropical climate with modest temperature variations and less rainfall. This region is characterized by seasons that alternately flood and parch the land, but despite the flooding, the area remains warm throughout the year. The rainfall here is between 500mm (19.69") and 1,0mm (0") per year, concentrated mainly in the summer months. In contrast to the Paranaense region, the Chaco region experiences a semi-arid climate during winters and transforms into swampy landscapes in summers.
