. It is the capital of the Province of Gauteng, the wealthiest province of South Africa, and it makes one of the largest world urban areas. Johannesburg came to birth in the nineteenth century as a gold-mine settlement, before growing into one of the world's most famous cities. The city is home to Soweto, formerly a collection of outskirt towns in the area, commonly known for being home to the legendary Nelson Mandela as well as Desmond Tutu.
Mandela House Museum is set in the former home of Nelson Mandela, and it showcases the history and struggles of the South African People. Other Museums like the Apartheid Museum, though laid-back, displays exhibitions that feature the struggle through the Apartheid rule and independence in South Africa. Others like the Constitution Hill, formerly used as a complex prison, also showcase the struggle for freedom in South Africa.
The Northeastern part of Johannesburg features the famous Johannesburg Zoo and a beautiful boating lake, within the scenic Herman Eckstein Park. Another fantastic spot, The Gold Reef City Park, encompasses leisure rides and a showcase of the history of Johannesburg's mining activity well as a thrilling tour of the underground areas.
Visiting the Johannesburg Art Gallery unveils the great artwork of the local people, as well as that of the seventeenth century from the Dutch artists. More artwork is displayed at the Arts on Main, an upcoming trendy gallery in the District of Maboneng.
Sandton City is a mall that features several market stalls and stores, some of which sell local delicacies and drinks, others sell various African craftworks, and others feature entertainment options for visitors.
