Sweden

Sweden is a Nordic nation situated in northern Europe on the eastern Scandinavian Peninsula. It is officially known as the Kingdom of Sweden and has an area of 447,425 square kilometers (172,752 square miles). As of 2023, its estimated population was 10,565,000. The capital of Sweden is Stockholm and the predominately spoken language is Swedish.

Christianity is the most commonly practiced religion in Sweden, with Protestant and Roman Catholic denominations being the most popular. Other religions, such as Islam, are also present in the country. The primary currency of Sweden is the Swedish krona.

The kingdom of Sweden is divided into three main regions - Norrland, Svealand, and Götaland. Norrland is the largest of these regions, covering about three-fifths of the country’s total land area. It is characterized by its mountainous terrain and vast forests, and it also contains numerous ore deposits. Svealand includes undulating glacial ridges, home to many of the country’s 90,000 lakes. The region of Götaland is made up of the stony Småland highlands and the Skåne plains. Roughly fifteen percent of the country lies north of the Arctic Circle.

The economy of Sweden is largely based on services, heavy industry, and international trade. Key industries include mining, steel production, timber, and tourism. Agricultural products cultivated in the country include grains, sugar beets, potatoes, and livestock. Sweden is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and is renowned for its comprehensive social welfare system.

Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary state, with the monarch acting as head of state and the prime minister as head of government. Its unicameral legislative body is called the Riksdag, or Parliament. As of 2021, the exchange rate for the Swedish krona against the US dollar was 10.546 krona per US dollar. In 2022, Sweden’s population ranking was 89th, and its population is projected to reach 11,261,000 by 2030. The life expectancy at birth for males in 2020 was 80.6 years, while that for females was 84.3 years. Literacy among people aged 15 and over is 100% for both sexes. The gross national income of Sweden in 2020 was 557,012 US dollars in thousands, with a GNI per capita of 53,800 US dollars.
