Houston is one of the most populated cities in the United States and is Texas' most populated city. The city of Houston is the seat of the county of Harris and is also the principal city of the entire Greater Houston metropolitan region. Small parts of Houston extend into the county of Montgomery and that of Fort Bend, though.
Founded in 1836 and made a city in 1837, Houston has developed fast over the years to become today's economic, cultural, financial, historical, and tourism hub of its region.
The city has a beautiful location to the southeastern part of the state of Texas, in proximity to both the Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, where the Buffalo Bayou and the white oak Bayou meet.
Visitors can learn much of Houston's history from the Historic District, where unique masterpieces and artifacts have been preserved in museums, surrounded by a blend of ancient and modern architecture. The Theatre District is a proud host of the famous Houston Grand Opera, which attracts huge crowds from across the globe. A visit to Houston is not complete without a tour of the NASA Space Center Houston, where both astronaut training and flight control centers have been featured.
The Museum District introduces numerous museums in the city, including the Impressionist and Renaissance themes of the Museum of Fine Arts. The surreal art center with the exclusive Menil Collection of artwork, together with Cy Twombly's unique gallery can also be found here. Close by is the renowned Houston Museum of Natural Science bordering the Rice University and Texas Medical Center research facilities.

When to visit Houston

The city of Houston experiences a humid subtropical climate of Köppen classification Cfa, just like the rest of the Southern United States. Mainly, the weather is composed of two major seasons; the wet season and the dry season. Summers are hot and humid, and the winters are mild and highly tolerable. Both spring and autumn are short and mild, acting more as transitional seasons.
Winter runs from mid-November through mid-March and has the mercury sticking to highs of 62.8°F (17.1°C) and lows of 45.7°F (7.6°C) on average. The highest rainfall is received in February, measuring a moderately high 7.1" (180.3mm) approximately from eight rainy days.
Summer extends from May through September, and Houston experiences hot and humid days and mildly cold and tolerable nights. The temperature highs reach 90.5°F (32.5°C), and lows reach 75.7°F (24.3°C) averagely. Occasionally, the heat soars up to 98.6°F (37°C) or slightly more, albeit in rare episodes.
Houston is a year-round travel destination, seeing that it has hot and pleasant summers and mildly cold winters. Extreme weather is rare, making it an excellent travel destination throughout the major seasons. However, the travel period peaks in summer, from May through August. This time has the hottest weather, dry days, and extended daylight hours to allow for a perfect tour of the city even late into the night. Many festivals and celebrations tend to occur at this time, too.
The main events in Houston include the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in March, which features all aspects of the livestock rearing, and shows of the best animals of the season. In January, Houston holds the grand parade of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to commemorate the legend.
