Weather in January

January in Croatia is marked by the heart of winter, and it is usually the coldest month of the year. The climate varies considerably from the inland regions to the Adriatic coast.

Inland, temperatures often dip below 0°C (32°F). Cities such as Zagreb and Čakovec, situated in the continental regions of the country, regularly experience sub-zero temperatures during January, making it the coldest month for these areas. This is a sharp contrast to December, which, while still cold, does not usually reach the same extreme low temperatures. Snowfall is frequent in these regions, contributing to the overall cold conditions.

In the Dinaric Alps, specifically in the higher altitudes of the Gorski Kotar and Lika regions that include the Velebit and Pljesevica mountain ranges, the January weather is even harsher. Here, temperatures can plummet to deep negative degrees and the region sees significant snowfall, often exceeding 100mm (3.94"). The cold Bora winds, known for their strength, can whip through these regions, intensifying the chill factor.

Contrasting sharply with the inland, the coastal areas of Croatia, such as Split, Dubrovnik, and the island of Hvar, experience milder winters. In these areas, January temperatures usually remain above 0°C (32°F), averaging between 8°C (46.4°F) and 12°C (53.6°F). Although these temperatures are relatively low compared to the rest of the year, they are noticeably higher than December and certainly higher than the February averages.

The Adriatic coast also receives a fair amount of rainfall in January, usually ranging from 60mm (2.36") to 100mm (3.94"). However, snowfall is rare in these regions, even in January. Coastal regions, while chillier compared to their typical Mediterranean climate, remain noticeably milder compared to the rest of the country.
