Prague has a humid continental type of climate (Köppen climate classification Dfb) with warm and wet summers and cold and dry winters. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, lies on the Vltava River in the Bohemian region, in the northwestern part of the country. The city lies in the rain shadow region of the Sudetes mountain range, which influences its climate along with its location in the temperate latitudes.

Prague, the Golden City and Heart of Europe, has an average elevation of 235 meters above sea level in the central part of the city. The rugged topography is uneven and consists of gently rolling hills, winding rivers, snow-capped mountains, agriculture, and open lands. The surrounding mountains provide a barrier to cold winds from the north of the continent.

Summers are wet and warm in Prague as one out of three days sees a moderate amount of rain. The average high temperature reaches up to 24.4°C (75.9°F) at the peak of August, but summer nights are cool and comfortable. Winters are chilly as the average low-temperature drops to -3.9°C (25°F) during the coldest month of January. Snowfall lasts from November to April and amounts to 711.2mm (28") in the year. Prague has temperate summers and cold winters, so the best time to visit Prague is from mid-May to mid-September when the weather is warm, and the sunshine is brightest of the year. The wind chill factor is less in the later part of spring while the early part of autumn is warm and colorful. Spring and autumn are relatively drier than the summer.
Summer is the popular time to visit Prague as the temperatures are warm at the most and the rainfall is modest.

Winter is cold and snowy, and generally the worst time to visit Prague. The temperatures may remain below the freezing mark for extended periods from December to February. The westerly winds increase the chill factor in the winter, and the cloudy skies reduce the sunshine to small periods during the day. Snowfall is common in the winter months while frost is regular during the cold nights. The snow-capped mountains look exceedingly beautiful but the days are short and mostly dark.

Prague has natural weather hazards in the form of thunderstorms, floods, and extratropical cyclones. Thunderstorms are frequent in the second half of spring and the majority of summer while they can extend to early autumn. Flooding affects Prague and the Bohemian region routinely due to heavy rainfall in Central Europe. Vltava river is prone to flooding and mostly affecting the southern and southeastern part of Prague. Occasional cyclones, such as Cyclone Emma in 2008, have struck Prague to cause moderate damage.
