Weather in March

As winter gives way to spring, March sees a noticeable change in Denmark's weather conditions. The harsh Siberian winds lose their intensity, and average temperatures begin to rise from the sub-zero levels observed in the winter months.

In March, temperatures start to inch towards the positive side of the thermometer, but the overall climate remains cold. The increase in temperature, while noticeable, is relatively mild compared to the more substantial warmth experienced in the later spring months.

March ushers in a decrease in sea temperatures to their lowest point, at 3.9°C (39°F), before they begin their ascent in the following months. Despite the cold sea temperatures, the coastal areas, particularly along the western Jutland coast, continue to experience somewhat milder weather due to the North Sea's influence.

Humidity in March starts its gradual decline from the winter peak, and wind speeds continue to drop, reducing the biting wind chill effects of the winter months.

Interestingly, March and April are the driest periods in Denmark, experiencing the lowest annual rainfall. The frequency of showers reduces compared to the winter months, and the form of precipitation gradually transitions from snow to rain as temperatures rise. Despite this, some snowfall may still occur, especially in the early part of the month.

With spring on the horizon, March brings longer hours of daylight, with a noticeable increase compared to the short days of January and February. Although the days are still not as bright as in late spring or early autumn, the increased daylight contributes to the overall feeling of the changing season.

Cities such as Copenhagen start experiencing warmer days in March, but it is still advisable to prepare for cold weather, particularly during the night and in the early part of the month.
