Budapest, Hungary is marked by a mild and wet continental-climate with sunny summer and cold winter. In all four seasons, the weather is not easily predictable.

Summer which lasts for 3.5 months marks the warm season. The climatic conditions during summer resemble those of the Mediterranean environment. The city sees lots of daylight averaging 9 to 11 hours every day with temperatures hovering around 70°F (21.1°C).

Winter last for about 3.5 months too - starting from December to February. These months are cold and dull with temperatures of about 29.5°F (-1.4°C). Precipitation is at 24" (609.6mm) annually and is equitably distributed all year round. July got the most amount of rainfall while January the least.

The best seasons to visit Budapest are autumn and spring, but most preferably autumn. These two seasons are characterized by warm weather, lots of sunshine, and less cold - a perfect time to experience the cultural entertainment on the Budapest Spring Festivals and take great shots of the dull but gorgeous autumn colors.

Summer (May, June, July, and August) is a favorite time to tour the city. Though it may sometimes get considerably hot during the day, the city gets crowded as most tourists come to see the brimming World Heritage Sites. Weather conditions are pleasant for more sightseeing due to longer days and night walking in the warm evenings.

Winter is not the best season to see Budapest. The weather is volatile and frosty as temperatures fluctuate between 41°F (5°C) high and 26.6°F (-3°C) low which leaves the city covered in a deep freeze. Due to these near freezing conditions, there are very little outdoor activities as the days are short with unpredictable rain or snowfall.

There are no known severe weather hazards in Budapest. However, at winter time, expect to see inversion fog make landfall along with a freezing rain.
Second, owing to the unpredictability of Budapest's climate, one must not rule out the possibility of being caught in a snowstorm.

The peak of winter brings cold and chilly conditions. Days generally are short and cloudier than the past months. Precipitation is low at 1.6" (40.6mm) of rain which takes place in the form of moderate snow. With temperatures below freezing point, January is the snowiest, cloudiest, and the wettest month.

Like in January, February's are cold. Although the severe freezing climate gives in to slight warmness, conditions are not pleasant. As this month still befalls amid winter season, day temperatures remain at 39.2°F (4°C) while night temperatures are a cold 28.4°F (-2°C). February is one of the driest months. Precipitation which occurs in the form of light rain to moderate snow ranges 1.2" (30.5mm) of rain. The overcast skies, fog, and rain create a slight bite in the atmosphere. March welcomes the end of winter in Budapest. The city wakes to heat and colorful events, festivals, and performance as the winter cold fades. April arrives with warmer days, more sunshine, and full bloom activities. Days length increase and cloud coverage drop from 82% to 76% setting up a rise in sunshine hours to 11 per day. Expect moderate to a light rain of up to 1.6" (40.6mm) throughout the month as snowfall becomes less and less likely. Average daytime heat in this month stands at 59°F (15°C) and 42.8°F (6°C) during the night.

May sees sunnier and warmer days with constant rain and open skies. Precipitation in May stands at 2.8" (71.1mm) of rain and takes place in the form of thunderstorms and light rain. The length of days extends up to 14.5 hours of daylight and cloud coverage drops from 76% to 70% resulting in more sunshine of 12 hours per day. During the day, temperature climb to a high of 69.8°F (21°C) while at night dive to a chilly 51.8°F (11°C).

The dawn of summer is characterized by longer days and a considerable volume of rain. Rain, mostly in the form of thunderstorms, totals 2.4" (61mm) of precipitation in this month. August in Budapest is tropical. Like July, it bears some of the sunniest days with an average of 13 hours of sunlight. September marks the arrival of autumn in Budapest. Weather conditions remain calm and sweet for sightseeing and stroll on the streets and squares.
