Podgorica has a humid subtropical type of climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with hot summers and cold and wet winters. Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, lies in the central part of the country, at the confluence of the Moraca and Ribnica rivers, and near the Adriatic Sea. Many water bodies throng the city, but a section of the Alps, the Rumija mountain, acts as a barrier to the maritime influence on the climate.

Podgorica is on flat terrain with an average elevation of 40 meters above sea level in contrast to the majority of Montenegro. The city occupies a part of the Zeta plain with a few hills that overlook the city and limit its expansion, particularly in the north. The topography has sparse hills, fertile plains, and river valleys along with a rich expanse of water bodies such as rivers and lakes.

Podgorica has hot summers with the temperatures routinely above 32.2°C (90°F), while 100 days during the year cross the 26.7°C (80.1°F) mark. The peak of the summer is in July in terms of the highest average high and low temperatures. Winters are cold and snowy at times, with the temperatures around the freezing point. Spring is mild with more rainfall in the early season, while autumn gets progressively rainier.

The annual precipitation in Podgorica is bountiful at 1600.2mm (63") with significant rainfall throughout the year, but the majority occurs between October and April. The rainy days amount to 122 during the year, but Podgorica still registers plenty of annual sunshine at 2481 hours. The average humidity is 65% during the year, with the lowest during the summer months. Snowfall occurs during the winter in limited quantities, but frost is common. The best time to visit Podgorica is from May to September, except for the hot summer months of July and August. The Podgorica area and Skadar Lake region see a slightly higher temperature in peak summer than the coastal regions as a fragment of the Dinaric Alps acts as a barrier to the Adriatic Sea influence on the region. The temperatures are agreeable, and it is less rainy than the wet period from autumn to winter, particularly during the latter part of spring. The conditions are sunnier than the rest of the year, and the humidity is at its lowest.

November to February is the worst time to visit Podgorica due to the cold and wet conditions. The peak of the wettest period occurs in November, in late autumn, and the rain is torrential at times. The skies are dark for a significant period during the winter, with cold conditions that occasionally go below freezing. The northerly cold air from the mountains adds to the wind chill factor, and the weather can be quite severe.

Podgorica faces threats in the form of thunderstorms during late spring and rainstorms and floods during the wet season. The flat geography and abundance of water sources pose the threat of floods. Torrential rainfall occurs from November to February, and even a single day of extremely heavy precipitation may result in flooding the city.
