Weather in January

January, the middle month of winter, is one of the coldest months of the year in Nepal. In the capital city of Kathmandu, located in the hilly mid-region, average temperatures range from 2°C (35.6°F) to 10°C (50°F), while in the southern lowland Terai regions, temperatures are slightly milder, varying between 5°C (41°F) and 20°C (68°F). Higher up in the Himalayan regions, temperatures often plunge below 0°C (32°F), with heavy snowfall in areas above 3,000 meters.

Pokhara, a popular city known for its lakes and panoramic mountain views, experiences average temperatures from 8°C (46.4°F) to 20°C (68°F) in January. Despite the chill, the weather is typically dry, and skies are often clear, offering remarkable views of the snow-clad Himalayas.

Contrastingly, the Terai plains can get enveloped in thick winter fog, limiting visibility for several days. This foggy condition, also known as the "Terai Cold Wave", is a unique January weather feature in these regions.

The climate in January is markedly colder compared to the preceding month of December and the following month of February. However, while February sees a gradual increase in temperatures, it also brings the start of the winter rain, making January the driest month of the winter season. This absence of precipitation combined with cold temperatures often leads to a freeze in high altitude regions, making trekking routes such as the Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit less accessible.

Moreover, while the Kathmandu Valley, despite the cold, remains accessible and offers pleasant trekking conditions, the Chitwan National Park in the Terai region provides an excellent wildlife viewing experience in January's cool and dry climate.
