Weather in May

May continues the hot season in Sudan with persistently high temperatures, although this month also signals the gradual onset of the rainy season in certain regions. Average temperatures across the country typically fall between 26°C (78.8°F) and 42°C (107.6°F).

In the capital city, Khartoum, located at the intersection of the Blue and White Nile, temperatures remain high during May. Daytime averages can reach around 42°C (107.6°F), while nighttime provides limited relief, with temperatures around 28°C (82.4°F). Khartoum continues to experience dry conditions in May, with rainfall still almost non-existent.

Moving north to Wadi Halfa, near the shores of Lake Nubia, the climatic conditions resemble those of Khartoum. Temperatures during the day can reach 40°C (104°F), dropping to 27°C (80.6°F) at night. As in Khartoum, May sees little to no rainfall in this city.

In contrast, Juba in southern Sudan begins to experience the onset of the rainy season in May. Temperatures range from a minimum of 24°C (75.2°F) to a maximum of 37°C (98.6°F). Importantly, rainfall increases significantly this month, with an average precipitation of 130mm (5.12"). This rainfall provides some respite from the escalating heat and begins to change the overall climatic conditions in this region.

Compared to April, temperatures in May are relatively stable, although the onset of the rainy season in the southern regions starts to influence the overall climate. Moving into June, the heat continues, but the intensification of the rainy season in southern and central Sudan brings further changes to the country's climate.
