Weather in February

February is the last full month of the Polar Night season in both Svalbard and Jan Mayen. The chill of the winter season is still very present, though daylight starts to return gradually as the month progresses, heralding the upcoming transition to spring.

In Svalbard, February is still very much within the grip of winter, with average temperatures languishing around -16°C (3.2°F). The capital city, Longyearbyen, shares these extreme conditions. There's a noticeable increase in daylight hours towards the end of the month, though the sun still doesn't fully rise above the horizon.

In Jan Mayen, the conditions during February remain harsh, though again milder than in Svalbard due to its proximity to the Gulf Stream. Average temperatures hover around -1°C (30.2°F). The Polar Night continues, but towards the end of the month, the first light of dawn begins to edge over the horizon. The Norwegian military base on the island experiences the same weather conditions.

Precipitation in both Svalbard and Jan Mayen during February is typically low, and any precipitation that does occur falls as snow. Coastal areas may see slightly more snowfall than the interior due to the influence of the sea.

Compared to the preceding month of January, February offers a slightly milder weather and an increase in daylight hours. It also acts as a prelude to March, when temperatures remain low but daylight hours increase significantly, signaling the definitive approach of spring. Despite these slight shifts, visitors should be prepared for continuing harsh winter conditions.
