Taipei has a humid subtropical type of climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with hot and humid summers and short and dry winters. The monsoon has a significant influence on the climate as also the proximity of the South and East China Seas and the Pacific Ocean. Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, lies in the Taipei Basin in the northern part of the island, with the Xindian River to its south and Tamsui to its west.

Taipei's center is a low-lying area, while hills, mountains, and volcanoes stand on the north, east, and southern sides. The Keelung River flows through the northern side, and the topography further consists of lakes, rivers, forests, and marshlands. The average elevation of the city is 1150 meters above sea level.

Taipei has an average of 1405 hours of sunshine over the year. The average humidity is between 73% and 80%, as the skies remain cloudy for the majority of the year. Annual precipitation is a massive 2413mm (95") due to the coastal location and heavy monsoon rainfall. Rainfall is throughout the year, out of which the summer from June to September is very rainy. Snow is absent except in the high mountains.

Summers are long, humid, and wet from May to October, with occasional rainstorms and typhoons from the Pacific Ocean. The temperatures are usually between 18.3°C (64.9°F) to 35°C (95°F) with the average high temperature of 34.3°C (93.7°F) at the peak of July. Winters from December to February are short, foggy, and relatively dry due to the influence of the winds from the north. The temperatures are mild and are mostly in the 10°C (50°F) to 26.7°C (80.1°F) range in the coldest period of January. Days and nights show little variation in temperatures and duration due to Taipei's location in the tropics. Spring and autumn are brief transitional periods between wet and dry seasons.

The highest temperature on record for Taipei is 39.3°C (102.7°F), set on 8 August 2013, while the record for the lowest temperature is -0.2°C (31.6°F), set on 13 February 1901.

Taipei receives heavy rainfall during the wet season, and May to October is prone to typhoons and thunderstorms. The best time to visit Taipei is from November to March when the temperatures are warm, the weather is mild, and the rainfall is less. The temperatures are in the 10°C (50°F) to 26.7°C (80.1°F) zone, but the skies tend to be cloudy as in the rest of the year in Taipei.

The wet and humid summer from June to October with sweltering heat is the worst time to visit Taipei. Additionally, the storm season has a particular liking for summer, and it rains very heavily. More than two-thirds of the annual rainfall occurs during the wet season, which is uncomfortable for tourists. Summer temperatures are mostly in the 18.3°C (64.9°F) to 35°C (95°F) range and the sunshine averages a daily 5 to 6 hours.

Taipei's location in the tropics and the proximity to huge water bodies increases the threat of rainstorms, floods, thunderstorms, and typhoons. The typhoon season lasts from June to October in the Pacific Ocean and affects the entire country, including Taipei. Typhoons of Southeast Asia affect the populace as they mostly bring destructive winds and torrential rain that result in floods and landslides. Cyclones also make major landfalls and cause severe damage.
