Weather in October

October in Antarctica marks the continuation of the spring season, bringing a gradual rise in temperatures and increase in sunlight. Coastal areas experience temperatures between -15°C (5°F) and -10°C (14°F), while the interior remains much colder, with temperatures around -60°C (-76°F).

Research stations like McMurdo and Amundsen-Scott South Pole also record a slight increase in temperatures. At McMurdo Station, temperatures hover around -15°C (5°F), while the South Pole Station experiences temperatures of -60°C (-76°F).

The sea ice begins to retract in October, though the continent remains largely inaccessible by conventional sea travel. As a result, tourism is minimal during this period.

In terms of wildlife, October is an important month for emperor penguins. The chicks start to grow their waterproof feathers, preparing for the harsher conditions and the limited food supply of the coming months. Other migratory birds also begin to return to the Antarctic coast.

Compared to September, October is slightly warmer and has longer daylight hours. Looking ahead to November, the weather continues to improve. Temperatures rise further, and daylight hours increase, setting the stage for the approaching summer season.
