The climate of Cameroon

Cameroon, a vibrant country in Central Africa, boasts a varied topography that ranges from coastal plains to plateaux, and mountains. Its diverse geography lends itself to equally varied climate conditions. The southern region is equatorial, characterized by consistent high humidity and temperatures fluctuating between 20 to 25°C (77°F). In this area, four distinct seasons unfold: two dry and two wet, with rainfall exceeding 1,0mm (0") annually. Douala, along the coastal plain, experiences an intense "hyperhumid" climate with a notable absence of a dry season. The southern Cameroon plateaux and the southern coastal plain showcase a Guinean-type climate endemic to the Congo Basin forest.

The northern part of Cameroon, in contrast, manifests a tropical climate subdivided into three types. Higher altitudes, as seen in the Adamaoua region, exhibit a humid tropical climate with moderate temperatures around 20°C (68°F) and bountiful rainfall, averaging 1,500mm (19.69") per year. The tropical Sudanese climate, found around the Bénoué basin, presents higher temperatures, and although the rainfall is substantial (1,300mm (11.81") annually in Garoua), the dry season extends to six months. Finally, the Sudano-Sahelian tropical climate of the northern desert regions typifies high temperatures, scant rainfall, and an eight-month-long dry season.

The best time to visit Cameroon

Cameroon offers varying climatic conditions throughout the year. However, the period from November to February is widely regarded as the most ideal time for a visit. During these months, the weather across the country remains relatively cool and dry, providing favourable conditions for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities. The cool Harmattan wind blowing from the Sahara desert moderates temperatures, making these months pleasant for visitors. Furthermore, this period coincides with many cultural festivities that travelers can partake in, enhancing their Cameroonian experience.

The worst time to visit Cameroon

The least favourable time to visit Cameroon is typically during the peak rainy seasons, primarily from May to June and September to October in the south. In these months, the country experiences heavy rainfall, making travel difficult due to poor road conditions. Moreover, high humidity levels could prove uncomfortable for some travelers. In the northern region, the rainy season spans from July to September, characterized by high heat and sporadic yet intense rain showers. During these times, it may become challenging to explore the country's natural wonders and engage in outdoor activities.
