Weather in January

January presents one of the most favourable weather conditions for visiting Cameroon, falling within the dry season across the country. The southern regions, including notable cities like Yaoundé and Douala, experience relatively cool conditions with temperatures fluctuating between 22 to 31°C (87.8°F). Precipitation is minimal during this time, averaging 20 to 30mm (1.18"), a marked decrease compared to the heavy rains seen in the preceding months of November and December.

Up north, the landscape is dominated by the Sudano-Sahelian zone. Here, the city of Maroua and surrounding areas experience a distinctly arid January. Temperatures in this region can reach upwards to 33°C (91.4°F) during the day, making it one of the warmer areas in Cameroon at this time. Night-time temperatures can drop to 15°C (59°F), offering some respite from the daytime heat. The Harmattan wind, which starts in December, continues its course, filling the air with dust and significantly reducing humidity levels. Compared to the south, precipitation is virtually non-existent in the north during January, a trend that continues into February.

Moving westward, towards the city of Limbé at the base of Mount Cameroon, January is characterized by slightly higher temperatures ranging from 24 to 33°C (91.4°F), with moderate levels of rainfall at about 50mm (1.97") for the month. Although rainfall is higher than in other regions, it's significantly less than what is typical for Limbé, making January one of the drier months for this area.

In contrast, the Adamawa Plateau in the centre of the country, experiences cooler temperatures during January, from 15 to 28°C (82.4°F), due to its higher altitude. Precipitation is low, mirroring the dry conditions experienced elsewhere in the country.

Overall, January's weather across Cameroon is markedly less extreme than in the wetter months, and significantly cooler and drier than the upcoming months of February and March.
