Puerto Peñasco is a small city that is found to the northwestern region of Sonora State,
Mexico, within the Puerto Peñasco Municipality on the eastern coast of the Gulf of California. Located on the strip of land that links the Baja California Peninsula with the rest of Mexico on the Sea of Cortez, Puerto Peñasco is home to numerous resorts and hotels that have sprouted in the recent past in a bid to accommodate the rising number of tourists flocking the city.
Easily referred to as Arizona’s Beach or Rocky Point, Puerto Peñasco has beautiful beaches like the Sandy Beach and the amazing Cholla Bay, otherwise known as La Choya pools for swimming and all other water-related activities. It is the closest point to the world's famous cities of Phoenix, Yuma, And Tucson, and its main activities include fishing and tourism.
Puerto Peñasco remains an essential part of northern Mexico's tourism hub even as it remains a part of the Greater Sonoran Desert. Its surroundings feature beautiful distant mountains and peaks of dormant volcanoes as well as the remains of ancient volcanoes along the beaches in Puerto Peñasco.
Puerto Peñasco experiences a desert climate, which is classified as BWh under the Köppen climatic classification. The weather is characteristic of desert weather with extremely hot days during summer and hot days during winter. Minimal rainfall throughout the year also characterizes Puerto Peñasco’ climate, with the total average precipitation in the entire year barely reaching 66mm (2.6") and the rainfall days not going past ten on average.
Winter begins in
December and extends through
February. The weather during winter is warm and pleasant, with the highest temperature range of 18.8°C (65.8°F) and 20.3°C (68.5°F) and the lowest in the 9.5°C (49.1°F) and 10.7°C (51.3°F) range. Rainfall is minimal, averaging 10mm (0.4") on average per month across one and a half rainfall days each month averagely. Relative humidity during winter averages 67%.
Summer runs from
May to
September and has sweltering days with the temperature highs ranging between 29.3°C (84.7°F) and 36.3°C (97.3°F) and lows of between 22.3°C (72.1°F) and 28.6°C (83.5°F). Occasionally, the temperature rises considerably and gets as high as 40°C (104°F)! Rainfall is scarce in summer, as is across the year in general. The average precipitation during summer is 5mm (0.2") per month, and the average of rainfall days remains low at only a half. This dryness, on top of the average humidity score of 64%, may make the days feel even hotter than registered. Usually, this is an excellent time to go fishing and to indulge in water sports and activities.
Puerto Peñasco can be visited any time during the year, but the peak of the travel period is during spring, from
March to mid-May and during summer, from May through
August. Spring has numerous activities amid the warm and pleasant weather as well as the colorful beauty of the flowering blossoms. Summer is the most popular time of the year and is full of festivities and celebrations of common events. These periods offer the best time to tour the city as well as indulge in fishing and any other outdoor activities, attracting crowds even from the nearby states.

June.
