Destin is a principal city in the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Crestview - Fort Walton Beach - Destin. It is located within the county of Okaloosa in
Florida, in the United States. The city is set on the beautiful location upon the Emerald Coast of Florida, a stretch that extends for approximately one hundred and sixty-one kilometers cutting across five counties.
Destin prides in its beaches; numerous white sand beaches crowned with emerald blue-green waters, a factor that has made it the ultimate tourist destination in its area. Originally, Destin was a small village with fishing as its principal activity. Today, the city boasts as the 'World's Luckiest Fishing Village' and has the biggest fleet of the largest fishing vessels in Florida.
The location of Destin dates back to when the area was a barrier island. With the changes in the sea level as well as strong winds and hurricanes, the barrier island gradually got connected to the mainland. Today, it sits on the peninsula that separates the bay of Choctawhatchee and the Gulf of Mexico.
Apart from its many beautiful beaches, Destin is also home to vast, well-manicured golf courses that form part of the attractive spots for visitors. On top of enjoying a game or two on the sprawling golf courses, visitors also get to enjoy the untapped nature in the many natural parks and gardens around the city. More of the outdoors is experienced as visitors take o strolling, basking, biking, or photography along the ever-wondrous Destin Harbor Boardwalk. Family fun is best enjoyed at Big Kahuna pools and waterpark, complete with its giant slides and waterfalls.
The beauty of the coastline being lined with rows upon rows of pine trees and oak trees is simply breathtaking, as it the splendid view of the palm trees along the beaches in select areas. Watching wildlife and marine life adds more to the fun outdoor activities in Destin.
Destin experiences a warm and temperate climate that is Köppen classified as Cfa. The climate is typical of mild, tolerable winters and hot, humid summers. Springs and autumns are both moderately cold and pleasant, but short and more of transitional seasons.
Summer has the temperature rising to 89.6°F (32°C) and over with the humidity in the 65% range, on top of up to ten hours of hot sun on most days. Winter enjoys mild weather with an average of 55.4°F (13°C) in its daily temperature. Both seasons receive moderate rainfall, most of which comes in the afternoons, posing minimal interruptions.
As much as Destin can be visited at any time during the year, the peak of the tourist period is experienced between
June and
August, at the height of summer. This period has the busiest outdoors in Destin, and beach-going remain bustling throughout the days and late into the evenings. The days may be hot and humid, but activities, like golfing and touring the city, continue. Some of the most attended events in the town also happen around this time, making the crowds soar even higher.
The Sandestin Wine Festival is one of the popular events in the city and is held in
April every year. Many activities relating to winemaking happen as well as wine sampling and tasting, attracting visitors from far and wide. Between
September and
October, Destin holds the annual Destin Seafood Festival at the vibrant Harbor Boardwalk to allow visitors to sample on the various seafood delicacies.
