Torrential Rain Triggers Widespread Flooding

Days of relentless rain pushed rivers beyond their limits across southern France, unleashing widespread flooding that officials described as exceptional. Near Montpellier, France, torrential rainfall inundated streets, submerged transport routes, and forced closures across large parts of the region.

Local authorities said the rainfall amounted to nearly two months’ worth in just three days. Water poured through riverbanks. Roads disappeared. The water moved fast.

Weather alerts remained in place through December 24 as floodwaters, though beginning to recede, continued to pose risks.

Rivers Overflow Across the Hérault Department

The Hérault department bore the brunt of the flooding. In Montpellier, France, the River Lez overflowed its banks, flooding roads, tram lines, and sections of the public transport network. Many streets became impassable as muddy water spread through low-lying neighborhoods.

Just south of the city, conditions worsened. In Agde, France, the River Hérault rose to more than 11 feet, reaching levels forecasters said likely marked the worst flooding since November 1994.

Residents shared footage of water surging across river promenades. Walkways vanished. The river filled the frame.

Evacuations and Power Outages Spread Along the Coast

Floodwaters also surged westward. Near Béziers, France, rivers burst their banks and inundated homes in Saint-Thibéry, France. In the coastal town of Palavas-les-Flots, France, dozens of residents were evacuated to emergency shelters as water pushed into residential areas.

Power outages rippled across the region. Nearly 1,000 homes were left without electricity, including about 520 in Montpellier. Parks, gardens, cemeteries, the local zoo, and the Christmas market were closed as a precaution.

Public transport routes were partially shut down. Movement across the region remained difficult.

Red and Orange Flood Warnings Remain in Effect

France’s flood warning service Vigicrues issued a red flood warning for the Hérault department, signaling the highest level of concern. Orange warnings were also in place for surrounding departments, including Aveyron, Lozère, and Tarn.

Authorities confirmed no casualties had been reported. The damage assessment continued as water levels slowly eased.

Officials continued to describe the event as “exceptional flooding," a phrase repeated across alerts and briefings. The rain had eased. The impact remained visible everywhere.
