Chilly Weekend With Showers and Highland Snow

A cool and unsettled start to the period is expected across the United Kingdom as a chilly air mass brings scattered showers and occasional sunshine during the weekend.

Showers will develop across many regions on Saturday. Some will be sharp and brief. Others will drift through with bursts of rain and graupel. Over higher ground these showers may turn wintry.

In the Highlands of Scotland, snow is expected on the highest terrain. Western Scotland is likely to see the most frequent showers, while other regions experience alternating spells of sunshine and passing rain.

The air will feel crisp. The showers will be uneven in distribution. Some locations will remain dry for hours while others receive repeated bursts of precipitation.

Frontal Rain Returns on Sunday

Winds will ease temporarily before strengthening again during Sunday as a band of frontal rain moves across the country.

This rain band will push east and southeast across the United Kingdom, followed by another unstable air mass that will bring additional showers behind the front.

As the front clears, skies may briefly brighten. Then another round of scattered showers will develop.

The pattern remains active, with Atlantic systems still influencing the weather.

Atlantic Rain Approaches Monday Before High Pressure Builds

Another area of rain arriving from the Atlantic is expected to reach the United Kingdom on Monday.

High pressure building across the nearby European continent may limit how far the rain spreads, particularly across southern parts of the country. Southeastern England could remain largely dry.

Through Tuesday, parts of northern and western Britain may still see rain and strengthening winds. Elsewhere the day may feel milder, with brighter skies and intervals of sunshine.

Gradually the weather pattern begins to shift.

High Pressure Brings Drier Days and Bright Sunshine

From Wednesday onward, high pressure near or over the United Kingdom becomes the dominant feature.

This change will bring a stretch of largely dry weather across much of the country.

Clearer skies overnight could allow temperatures to fall quickly. Cold nights may produce patches of fog and occasional frost in sheltered areas.

During the day, however, sunshine will become more common and temperatures will feel milder.

In eastern coastal areas, an easterly breeze may develop at times. The wind may carry a chill off the North Sea, making these coastal locations feel cooler than inland areas.

Late March Likely to Stay Mostly Dry

Looking ahead to the period from 23 to 29 March, forecasters expect high pressure to remain close to the United Kingdom.

The exact position of this high pressure remains uncertain. Current indications suggest it may settle to the north of the country.

If this scenario develops, much of the United Kingdom would experience extended dry weather with precipitation totals below normal.

However, the positioning of the high could also allow occasional low pressure systems to approach from the south. In that case, rain could spread across parts of southern Britain.

Most regions are still expected to remain drier than usual for late March.

Temperatures Near or Slightly Above Average

Easterly winds could develop for several days during this period.

These winds may feel brisk along eastern coastlines, especially near locations bordering the North Sea. Inland regions would likely feel milder.

Across the country, temperatures are expected to remain slightly above the seasonal average at least during the early part of the period.

Later in the month, the high pressure area could shift northwest of the United Kingdom. If this occurs, winds may turn northerly or northwesterly.

That shift would return temperatures closer to seasonal norms and could introduce scattered showers once again.

Early April Outlook Points to Settled Conditions

Forecast signals for the period from 30 March to 12 April continue to suggest a relatively settled pattern.

High pressure anomalies are expected to remain positioned at higher latitudes and extend toward the United Kingdom.

There are currently no clear indications of a strong cold outbreak during early April. Instead, day to day temperatures will likely fluctuate near seasonal averages.

Calm nights may allow frost to form in some areas. Patches of fog could develop where winds remain light.

Overall conditions are expected to remain drier than normal, although occasional showers may still develop. In northern high ground these showers could briefly turn wintry.

Forecast confidence decreases farther into the period, particularly concerning precipitation and wind patterns.
