Snow and Flood Alerts Spread Across Europe

A powerful winter storm system brought widespread disruption across parts of Europe, combining heavy snow, intense rainfall and rising rivers. Emergency alerts were issued in several countries as authorities moved to contain impacts that unfolded rapidly during the Christmas period.

From southern France to northern Italy and central Austria, the storm strained infrastructure, forced evacuations and left thousands without electricity. In multiple regions, officials warned that conditions had reached critical thresholds.

France Under Orange Flood Warnings

Several French departments were placed under orange level meteorological warnings as heavy rain raised concerns about flooding. Haute Corse, Pyrénées-Orientales and Aude were flagged by Météo France for extreme weather expected to persist until Saturday, December 27.

Authorities warned of intense rainfall and rising river levels, particularly in southern France and the Roussillon region. Television network BFM reported that the flood alerts were issued preventively due to the risk of waterways overflowing.

Forecast rainfall totals underscored the severity of the situation:
  • 150 to 200 liters of rain per square meter in Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales by Saturday noon
  • 80 to 120 liters per square meter in Haute Corse, locally up to 150
Meteorologists noted that these amounts correspond to two to three months of typical rainfall. River levels were closely monitored as runoff increased across the region.

Austria Buried Under Heavy Snow

In Austria, heavy snowfall on Christmas Eve and overnight into Christmas Day caused widespread travel chaos. In Styria, drivers became stranded in deep snowdrifts while power outages spread through rural and mountainous areas.

Energy provider Energie Steiermark reported that around 2,500 households were without electricity by midday. Fallen trees, weighed down by wet snow, damaged power lines repeatedly.

“As soon as the first faults were repaired, wet snow caused new outages," the company said in a social media statement, adding that repairs would take at least 24 hours.

Western Styria was among the hardest hit regions. Power disruptions were also reported near the border with Slovenia. Meteorologists said snowfall totals ranged widely:
  • 10 to 20 centimeters across much of Austria
  • 30 to 40 centimeters in areas including Reinischkogel Weinebene, Pack and Herzogberg
Road conditions deteriorated quickly as snow continued to fall, complicating emergency response efforts.

Rivers Reach Critical Levels in Italy

In Italy, heavy rain and snow combined to push rivers toward dangerous levels, particularly in the Emilia-Romagna region. Authorities issued a red level weather alert for areas around Bologna, Ferrara and Ravenna.

Rising water levels were reported along the Senio and Lamone rivers. According to Italian news agency ANSA, both rivers reached or exceeded critical thresholds in several locations, though flooding had not yet occurred at the time of reporting.

Preventive evacuations were ordered in multiple communities. In Castel Bolognese, residents living along the Senio River were told to leave their homes. In Bagnacavallo, authorities evacuated the Villanova and Glorie neighborhoods as the Lamone continued to rise.

Evacuated residents were directed to reception centers and local sports halls. Civil protection services in Emilia-Romagna remained on high alert while monitoring rainfall, noting that a weakening of precipitation could ease pressure on river systems.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Monitoring

Across affected countries, civil protection teams and utility crews worked through difficult conditions. Snow weighed down trees. Rain soaked already saturated ground. Rivers pressed against their banks.

Warnings remained active as meteorological services emphasized the evolving nature of the storm. Authorities continued to urge caution, particularly in flood prone and mountainous areas, while tracking the storm’s progression across Europe.
