A Taste of Summer Returns

After a noticeably cooler spell last week, warmer weather is making a comeback across the United Kingdom.

The change will be felt almost everywhere. Temperatures are set to climb steadily through the week, bringing a more summer-like feel to many towns and cities. Mornings will become milder, nights less chilly, and daytime temperatures generally higher than those seen over the past several days.

For western Scotland and Northern Ireland, the warmest conditions are expected early in the week. Under gentle south-easterly winds, temperatures should reach between 19C and 21C.

Further south and east, winds shifting between southerly and south-westerly directions will help push temperatures into the low and mid-20s Celsius on several days.

The Hottest Weather Arrives Later This Week

The real burst of heat is expected to arrive on Thursday and Friday.

A large pool of very warm air developing across continental Europe is forecast to edge closer to Britain. At this stage, central and eastern parts of England appear most likely to benefit from the hottest conditions.

Forecast temperatures are expected to reach around 30C, although a little more sunshine or a slight change in wind direction could push some places a degree or two higher.

It will feel very different from the weather experienced only a week ago.

A brief dip in temperatures is possible on Saturday as south-westerly winds return. Even then, computer models continue to suggest that warmer-than-average conditions could quickly rebuild and potentially last well into the following week.

Heat Alerts Issued Across Parts of England

As temperatures rise, health officials are preparing for the impact.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat health alerts covering the East Midlands, East of England, London, England and South East England from 17 June until 22 June.

The alerts are designed to help health and social care services prepare for increased demand during hotter weather. Extended periods of heat can place additional pressure on vulnerable people, particularly older adults and those with existing health conditions.

Simple precautions remain important:
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid direct sunshine during the hottest hours of the day
  • Keep homes as cool as possible

A Battle Between Heat and Unsettled Weather

The forecast is not entirely straightforward.

Two very different weather systems are influencing conditions across the region.

To the south and east, strong high pressure over mainland Europe is generating intense heat. Temperatures in Paris, France and Berlin, Germany could climb to 35C or 36C.

To the north-west of the United Kingdom, an area of cooler low pressure continues to bring showers and unsettled conditions.

The country sits between these competing influences.

That means plenty of warm sunshine at times, but also occasional spells of rain. Some places may remain completely dry while others receive heavy showers only a short distance away.

The greatest chance of rainfall remains across northern and western areas, closer to the low-pressure system. South-eastern parts of England are likely to stay much drier.

Even where showers develop, rainfall totals should generally be lower than those seen in recent weeks.

June Has Already Delivered Plenty of Rain

The shift toward warmer weather comes after an exceptionally wet start to the month in several locations.

Across parts of southern England, Cumbria, Isle of Man, Dumfries and Galloway, and Northern Ireland, rainfall totals have already exceeded what would normally fall during the whole of June.

Some areas have been particularly wet.

In Norwich, England, Milton Keynes, England and Bournemouth, England, more rain has already fallen this month than during the entire spring season.

Lawns are green, rivers have risen and gardens have soaked up the moisture. Now the weather pattern is beginning to change.

Difficult Days Ahead for Hay Fever Sufferers

The return of warmth will not be welcome news for everyone.

Grass pollen season is moving toward its peak, and many people have already noticed symptoms becoming more troublesome. Sneezing, itchy eyes and runny noses have become increasingly common over recent days.

Recent rainfall helped suppress pollen levels for a time. Rain tends to wash pollen from the air and keep concentrations lower.

As temperatures rise and conditions become drier, pollen production is expected to increase rapidly.

Warm, sunny and breezy weather often creates the most challenging conditions for allergy sufferers. Those conditions are expected to become much more common as the week progresses.
