A sudden taste of summer in early April

Sunlight stretched across much of the UK, and temperatures climbed far beyond what early April usually delivers. In Kew Gardens, London, United Kingdom, the thermometer reached 26.6°C, making it the hottest day of 2026 so far.

It was not just warm. It stood out.

This became the highest temperature recorded in the first half of April since 1946. A rare peak, arriving early, and moving quickly.

Warmer than southern Europe on the same day

The warmth did not just break records. It changed the map.

London, United Kingdom ended up warmer than well-known destinations including Rome, Italy and Ibiza, Spain. Places usually associated with spring warmth were, for a moment, cooler than the UK.

Typical April values sit between 12°C and 15°C.

This was well above that. Significantly above.

Warm air flows north and settles briefly

The pattern behind it was steady.

High pressure allowed warm air to move northward, carried by southerly winds. Skies stayed mostly clear, and the sun did the rest.

Temperatures rose quickly, especially across central and southern England.

Further north and west, the story was different. Northern Ireland and northwest Scotland remained cooler, sitting on the edge of the warm air.

A sharp change arrives within hours

By Thursday, a cold front begins to move in, turning winds to a more westerly direction and bringing cooler air across the country. Temperatures drop noticeably, in some places by around 10°C compared to the previous day.

Rain begins to spread. Showers become more frequent.

The warmth fades quickly.

Pollen rises as temperatures peak

The warm spell brings more than just higher temperatures.

Pollen levels rise sharply, especially from ash and birch trees, reaching very high levels across parts of England and Wales. At the same time, UV levels increase to moderate values, enough to catch people unprepared after the colder months.

The air feels different. Lighter, but heavier at the same time.

From warmth back to typical spring conditions

As the front passes, the pattern resets.

Cooler air settles in across much of the UK, while southeastern areas briefly hold onto milder conditions. Showers move through, clouds return, and temperatures drift back toward seasonal averages.
