Deadly Impacts in Portugal

Storm Claudia swept across Portugal with sudden, violent force, leaving a trail of devastation that unfolded through the night. In Fernao Ferro, across the River Tagus from Lisbon, an elderly couple was found dead inside their flooded home. Authorities reported that they had been sleeping as the water rose rapidly, leaving no chance to escape. The quiet residential streets turned into dark, rising pools, trapping the pair before anyone could reach them.

In Albufeira, in southern Portugal, footage captured from a distance showed a swirling column tearing through a camping area. Caravans lifted, metal twisted, roofs torn apart. “It all happened in seconds," one witness said in a shaky voice. “The sky turned and the wind just took everything."
Regional civil protection commander Vitor Vaz Pinto confirmed that an 85-year-old British woman was killed in the tornado, while 28 others were injured at a nearby hotel. Two remain in hospital with serious injuries.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed “solidarity with the family of the victim who died" and wished a swift recovery to all who were hurt.
As conditions worsened, the national meteorological agency IPMA placed the entire Algarve and the districts of Beja and Setubal under an amber alert, its second-highest warning level.

Flooding Engulfs Monmouth, Wales

By Saturday, Storm Claudia had reached Wales, where Monmouth, a town near the England border, woke to muddy water flooding its streets. Aerial images showed the town centre submerged, parked cars barely visible, and storefronts swallowed by thick brown water after the River Monnow surged to a record level.

Almost 12 centimetres of rain fell across southeast Wales overnight.
The river simply could not hold it.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service conducted dozens of rescues and welfare checks as families were helped out of their homes in the dark. Boats moved slowly between buildings, navigating what had become temporary canals.
One local resident described the scene: “The water kept rising, and then the road just vanished under it. I have not seen Monmouth this bad in decades."

Peter Fox, a Conservative member of the Welsh Parliament, echoed that sentiment.
“I personally have not seen it so bad for probably 40 years," he said, referring to the period since flood defences were installed for Monmouth.

Natural Resources Wales issued 11 flood warnings, including four severe warnings indicating immediate danger to life. Seventeen additional flood alerts remained active as rivers continued to rise.

England Faces Widespread Flood Alerts

As the storm pushed further east, parts of England were hit by rising water and high winds. The Environment Agency reported:
  • 49 active flood warnings
  • 134 flood alerts
Rail services were disrupted by toppled trees and floodwater covering tracks. Some communities faced evacuation as rivers swelled, and authorities warned that not all waterways had reached their peak levels.

Across the border in Portarlington, Ireland, additional flooding was reported, with ongoing concerns that more rivers could breach their banks. Strong winds knocked out power to thousands of homes across the region, and emergency workers cleared blocked roads through the day.

A Region Braces for More

Storm Claudia arrived with violent elements that shifted from rising water to destructive wind within hours. A tornado in Portugal. Deadly flooding in Wales. Widespread disruption in England. As temperatures now begin to fall across the United Kingdom, forecasters warn that the storm’s impacts may linger, with subfreezing nights ahead and additional flooding possible where rivers remain dangerously high.

Communities from Lisbon, Portugal, to Monmouth, Wales, will spend days assessing the damage. And as one resident in Monmouth said, standing outside a flooded house with water still swirling around his boots:
“You never expect the river to come this far. But today it did."
