Spain Watches the Forecast Ahead of Easter Week

Easter week is drawing closer across Spain. Streets will soon fill with visitors, processions and travelers heading for a short spring escape.

Semana Santa, one of the most important holiday periods of the year, runs from March 29 to April 6. Hotels fill quickly. Trains are busy. Plans are made weeks in advance.

This year many people are watching the sky.

The beginning of the year has already brought remarkable rainfall. January and February were among the wettest in nearly half a century across large parts of the country. After weeks of gray skies and steady rain, many are hoping for a calmer stretch of spring weather.

Meteorologists say it is still too early to give a precise forecast for the holiday period. Yet early signals are beginning to appear.

Rainfall May Stay Close to Normal Levels

Current projections suggest rainfall during Semana Santa may remain near the seasonal average across much of the Iberian Peninsula.

Meteorologists at eltiempo.es say the overall precipitation pattern does not currently point toward an unusually wet holiday period. At the same time, some areas may experience slightly higher rainfall totals than normal.

Forecast models highlight several regions where rain may become more frequent during the week.

These areas include:
Some of these regions may experience unsettled conditions during the second half of the week.

Cold Air and Low Pressure Could Bring Showers

Weather specialists say the atmosphere may contain pockets of colder air during the period. If low pressure systems develop over or near the Iberian Peninsula, they could trigger showers and isolated thunderstorms.

This pattern appears more likely later in the holiday week.

Even small changes in atmospheric circulation can shift the forecast quickly. Meteorologists stress that these projections remain preliminary.

The pattern is still evolving.

Temperatures Could Be Slightly Below Average

Forecast models also hint that temperatures during Semana Santa may trend slightly below the national average.

Cooler signals appear in several areas of Spain. According to Meteored’s projections, the following regions may experience temperatures somewhat lower than typical for early spring:
  • The Mediterranean coast
  • The Ebro Valley
  • Andalusia
  • The southern plateau
  • The Canary Islands
Even so, many areas are still expected to see periods of sunshine and mild daytime conditions.

Rain During Holy Week Is Not Unusual

Historical records show that rain during Semana Santa is far from rare.

A review of past weather patterns by eltiempo.es indicates that precipitation occurs during Holy Week in roughly 70 to 80 percent of years across much of Spain.

Early spring is often a transitional period. Weather systems move through quickly. A sunny morning can give way to clouds and showers by afternoon.

This shifting pattern is part of the season.

Spring Outlook Still Points Toward Warmer Conditions

While the Easter forecast carries uncertainty, seasonal outlooks suggest that spring across Spain may still trend warmer than average.

Meteorological projections show varying probabilities of above average temperatures depending on the region.

The Balearic Islands currently show about a 70 percent chance of warmer than average conditions. Across most of the Iberian Peninsula the probability stands near 60 percent. The Canary Islands and the southwestern part of the peninsula show roughly a 50 percent chance.

These projections point toward a spring season that may lean warmer overall, even if Easter week itself brings periods of cloud, showers and cooler air.
